Overview

Round Tube Plugs

Open tube ends on metal furniture scratch floors, collect moisture, rattle with every movement, and look unfinished. Round tube plugs press inside hollow round tubing to seal the end, silence the rattle, protect floors from sharp metal edges, and give legs a clean finished appearance. Polyethylene (PE) construction with flexible internal ribs that adapt to different wall thicknesses for a secure friction fit. No glue, no screws, no tools. Also referred to as tube plugs for chair legs, round end plugs for metal tubing, or furniture leg plugs round.

from Ø 10 mm to Ø 80 mm, with multiple wall thickness options per diameter. Black, grey, and white. The flat head sits flush with the tube end for a low-profile finish. Sold in packs of 4.

Available Sizes: 26 Round Tube Plugs

Round tube plugs are sized by the tube’s outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness. You need both measurements to select the correct plug. Each diameter is available in one or more wall thickness ranges to accommodate different tubing specifications. If your tube’s OD and wall thickness both fall within a listed combination, the plug fits.

Ø 10 to 20 mm

Small tubing: side chair legs, lightweight frames, display fixtures, wire shelving. Plugs in this range handle the narrowest furniture and fixture tubing. Wall thickness options from 1.0 mm to 2.5 mm.

Ø 22 to 35 mm

Standard furniture tubing: dining chairs, kitchen chairs, office seating, bar stools. The most common range for round tube plugs on residential and commercial seating. Wall thickness options from 1.0 mm to 4.0 mm.

Ø 38 to 80 mm

Large tubing: table legs, heavy commercial frames, industrial racking, display systems, gym equipment. Plugs in this range cover the largest furniture and industrial tubing. Wall thickness options from 1.0 mm to 4.0 mm.

Colors: black, grey, and white. Not all colors are available in all sizes. For custom colors or sizes, visit Business Solutions. For round tubing that needs leveling feet instead of flat plugs, round threaded inserts accept adjustable leveling feet in M6, M8, M10, and M12 threads. For external coverage instead of internal, round end caps slip over the outside of the tube.

How to Measure Your Tube

Two measurements determine the correct plug: the tube’s outside diameter (OD) and the wall thickness. Getting either one wrong means the plug will not fit. Too large and it will not enter the tube. Too small and it will not grip. Round tube plugs are sized to match the OD of the tubing, not the inside diameter.

Step 1. Measure the outside diameter (OD)

Use calipers or a ruler across the widest point of the tube opening. Measure outside edge to outside edge, not the inside. This is the OD that determines which round tube plug you need.

Step 2. Measure the wall thickness

Use calipers to measure the thickness of the tube wall at the open end. Or measure the OD and the inside diameter (ID), then calculate: wall thickness = (OD minus ID) / 2. The flexible ribs must match your wall thickness range for a proper grip.

Step 3. Match both measurements

Find the round tube plug that matches your OD and includes your wall thickness in its range. Both must match. A plug sized for Ø 25 mm / 1.5 to 2 mm wall will not grip properly in a Ø 25 mm tube with 3 mm walls.

Common mistake: measuring the inside diameter instead of the outside diameter. Round tube plugs press inside the tube, but they are sized by the OD because that number is printed on most tubing specifications and is easier to measure accurately. If you only have the ID, add twice the wall thickness to get the OD.

How to Install

No tools required for most sizes. The flexible PE body compresses as it enters the tube, then the internal ribs expand against the inner tube wall to create a friction fit. Larger sizes or thick-walled tubes may benefit from a gentle tap with a rubber mallet. Installation takes seconds per leg.

What you need
  • The correct round tube plug matched to your OD and wall thickness
  • A rubber mallet (optional, for larger sizes or tight fits)
  • Clean, dry tube ends free of burrs or sharp edges
Installation steps
  1. Inspect the tube end. Remove any burrs, sharp edges, or debris from the inside of the tube opening. A clean, smooth edge ensures the ribs seat properly.
  2. Align the round tube plug with the tube opening. The flat head faces outward. The ribbed body faces into the tube.
  3. Press the plug into the tube by hand. The flexible ribs compress as the plug enters, then expand against the inner wall. Push until the head sits flush with the tube end.
  4. For tight fits or larger diameters, tap the plug head gently with a rubber mallet until flush. Do not strike hard enough to deform the head.
Removal: pry gently from one edge with a flat-head screwdriver or push from the opposite end of the tube if accessible. The PE body flexes without breaking. Plugs can often be reinstalled if undamaged.

What Round Tube Plugs Solve

Open tube ends create multiple problems that a single plug addresses in one installation. Every unsealed hollow leg is a source of noise, floor damage, moisture entry, and visual clutter. The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) recommends protective measures on all furniture legs. Round tube plugs are the first step for any hollow metal leg on smooth, hard floors or carpet. Not recommended for rough hard floors like textured tile or stamped concrete, where the PE material wears quickly.

Floor protection

Bare metal tube edges are sharp, thin contact points that concentrate the furniture’s full weight on a narrow ring. Every movement drags that sharp edge across the floor. Round tube plugs replace the sharp metal edge with a smooth, flat PE head that distributes load and eliminates scratching on hardwood, tile, laminate, vinyl, and concrete. For dedicated hard-floor protection beyond basic PE contact, apply a round self-adhesive furniture pad to the plug head, or choose the pad slot variant with a PA6 pad channel built in (pad sold separately).

Noise and vibration control

Hollow tubes amplify vibration and resonate with every bump, drag, and contact. The result is rattling, buzzing, and metallic noise that multiplies across a room full of metal furniture. Round tube plugs seal the tube end and dampen the resonance. The PE body absorbs contact vibration instead of transmitting it through the hollow cavity. In restaurants, classrooms, and conference rooms where dozens of metal chairs move simultaneously, the difference is immediate and significant.

Moisture and debris sealing

Open tubes collect moisture during floor cleaning, condensation in humid environments, and debris from daily use. Trapped moisture causes internal corrosion on steel tubing that weakens the structure from the inside out. Round tube plugs seal the opening and prevent moisture, dirt, and insects from entering the tube interior. In coastal, tropical, or high-humidity environments, this protection is especially important for steel-framed furniture.

Finished appearance

An open tube end looks unfinished. On retail fixtures, display furniture, restaurant seating, and any customer-facing application, exposed tube ends signal incomplete manufacturing. Round tube plugs give every leg a clean, professional endpoint. Available in black, grey, and white to match the frame finish or contrast for a design accent.

Materials and Construction

Two functional zones in one piece. The head seals and finishes the tube end. The ribbed body grips the inside of the tube wall. Both are molded from a single piece of polyethylene (PE) with no joints, seams, or separate components. Round tube plugs rely entirely on mechanical grip rather than adhesive.

PE Polyethylene Body Plug body and head

Polyethylene provides the combination of flexibility and durability that makes press-fit tube plugs work. The material flexes to compress during insertion, then recovers to grip the tube wall. It will not crack from impact, will not become brittle in cold environments, and resists moisture, chemicals, and UV exposure. PE handles indoor and outdoor environments without degradation.

  • Flexibility: compresses during insertion, recovers to grip
  • Impact resistance: will not crack or shatter from drops or strikes
  • Chemical resistance: stable against cleaning products, oils, and moisture
  • Temperature range: performs in standard indoor and outdoor environments
  • UV resistance: will not degrade or become brittle from sunlight exposure
  • Recyclable: PE is widely recyclable
Flexible Internal Ribs Grip mechanism

The ribbed profile on the plug body accommodates a range of wall thicknesses within each size. The ribs compress against thin walls and expand against thick walls, providing a secure friction fit across the specified wall thickness range. This adaptive grip eliminates the need for adhesive or mechanical fasteners. The friction fit holds securely under vibration, lateral movement, and sustained furniture weight because the ribs distribute grip force along the full insertion depth.

  • Multiple ribs per plug for distributed grip along the tube interior
  • Each rib compresses independently to adapt to slight variations in wall thickness
  • Friction fit holds under vibration, movement, and sustained load
  • No adhesive required: the ribs do all the work

Comparison to Alternatives

If you have been using tape, generic caps, or leaving tubes open, here is how purpose-built round tube plugs compare to common workarounds.

vs. Leaving Tubes Open

Open tubes scratch floors, collect moisture, amplify noise, and look unfinished. These plugs solve all four problems in one press-fit installation. No tools, no adhesive, no ongoing maintenance.

vs. Tape or Makeshift Covers

Tape peels. Coins fall out. DIY solutions fail within days under furniture weight and movement. Engineered PE ribs grip the tube wall mechanically. The friction fit on round tube plugs holds under vibration, load, and repeated movement without adhesive.

vs. Round End Caps (External)

Round end caps slip over the outside of the tube instead of pressing inside. End caps are visible from the side and add to the tube’s outer dimension. Internal round tube plugs sit flush with the tube end and do not change the outer profile. Choose based on appearance preference and whether the tube interior is accessible.

vs. Pad Slot Variant

Pad slot these plugs include a recessed channel in the head that accepts a PA6 pad for dedicated floor protection. The PA6 pad is sold separately and pressed into the channel before use. If you need the plug plus hard-floor scratch protection in one part, the pad slot variant combines both. Standard round tube plugs provide basic PE floor contact; add a round self-adhesive furniture pad to the plug head if floor protection is also needed.

vs. Threaded Inserts

Round threaded inserts also press inside hollow round tubes, but they include a metal insert that accepts adjustable leveling feet. If you need height adjustment or floor leveling, threaded inserts are the right choice. If you just need a sealed, finished end, round tube plugs are simpler and more cost-effective.

Which Round Tube Plug Head Style Do You Need?

All round tube plugs use the same internal ribbed PE body. The difference is the head profile, which determines appearance, floor contact, and specialized function.

Flat Head (Standard) ← You are here.

Flush, low-profile finish. The most common choice for general-purpose furniture and fixtures. Flat PE surface contacts the floor.

Conical Head

Tapered head for a contoured, slightly raised appearance on visible tube ends.

Domed Head

Rounded dome for decorative applications and non-floor-contact ends.

Half-Sphere Head

Full hemisphere for maximum decorative effect on exposed frame ends.

Anti-Slip (TPE)

Rubber TPE head that grips smooth floors. Prevents sliding on hardwood, tile, and vinyl.

Pad Slot

Recessed channel accepts a PA6 pad (sold separately) for hard-floor scratch protection.

Angled

Angled head for splayed or tilted legs. Base sits flat on the floor at an angle.

Where People Use These Plugs

Anywhere hollow round tubing needs a sealed, finished end. From residential dining chairs to commercial fixtures and industrial racking, round tube plugs seal, silence, and finish every exposed tube end.

Residential and commercial furniture

Metal dining chairs, kitchen chairs, bar stools, office seating, conference room furniture, restaurant seating, patio furniture, and any chair or table with hollow round metal legs. The Ø 20 to 30 mm range covers the majority of residential and commercial seating. For dedicated hard-floor scratch protection beyond basic PE contact, apply a round self-adhesive furniture pad to the plug head, or choose the pad slot variant with a PA6 pad channel built in (pad sold separately).

Fixtures, racking, and industrial

Retail display fixtures, warehouse racking, gym equipment, workbenches, trade show displays, garden structures, greenhouse frames, and industrial equipment. The Ø 38 to 80 mm range covers most commercial and industrial tubing. Available in bulk for manufacturing and venue fit-outs. For commercial pricing, visit Business Solutions.

Maintenance and Inspection

These plugs require almost no maintenance. The PE material does not degrade under normal indoor or outdoor conditions. Check each plug periodically to ensure it remains seated flush with the tube end. On high-traffic commercial furniture (restaurant chairs, school cafeteria seating), inspect every 3 to 6 months. On static furniture and fixtures, an annual visual check is enough.

If a round tube plug has loosened or been dislodged, inspect the tube end for burrs or debris that may be preventing a proper grip. Clean the tube interior, check that the plug size matches the OD and wall thickness, and re-press. If the plug is damaged, replace it. Plugs are sold in packs of 4, so keeping spares on hand for commercial environments is practical.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need tube plugs or end caps?

Round end caps slip over the outside of the tube and are visible from the side. Round tube plugs press inside the tube and sit flush with the end, invisible from the side. Choose plugs when you want a clean, low-profile finish that does not change the tube’s outer dimensions. Choose end caps when the tube interior is not accessible or when you prefer an external profile.

Will round tube plugs stay in place on chairs that get dragged across tile?

Yes. The flexible PE ribs create a mechanical friction fit against the inner tube wall. The grip holds under vibration, lateral movement, and repeated dragging. If a plug loosens over time in a high-use commercial environment, check that the tube end is clean and free of burrs, then re-press or replace. For scratch protection on tile and other smooth, hard floors, pair flat-head plugs with a round self-adhesive furniture pad applied to the plug head, or choose pad-slot round tube plugs, which have a PA6 pad channel built in. The pad is sold separately.

Can I use these on outdoor patio furniture?

Yes. PE is UV-resistant, water-resistant, and chemically stable. It will not degrade, crack, or become brittle from sun or rain exposure under normal outdoor conditions. Round tube plugs seal the tube end against moisture entry, which also prevents internal corrosion on steel tubing exposed to weather.

What if my tube needs leveling feet instead of flat plugs?

Use round threaded inserts instead. Threaded inserts press into the tube the same way, but include a metal nut (M6, M8, M10, or M12) that accepts adjustable leveling feet. If you just need a sealed, finished end with no height adjustment, round tube plugs are simpler and more cost-effective.

Do round tube plugs come with PA6 pads for floor protection?

No. Standard round tube plugs have a flat PE head only. For integrated floor protection on smooth, hard floors, use round tube plugs with pad slot, which accept a PA6 pad insert in the recessed head channel. For an anti-slip grip on smooth floors, use anti-slip TPE round tube plugs.
