Getting the size right
No. A rivet needs wood fibers to grip, so nail-on is solid wood only. For metal, plastic or chrome legs, fit the self-adhesive version of the same glide: identical PA6 face and ABS body, bonded with extra-high-bond acrylic foam tape instead.
Go smaller. A glide that sits very slightly inside the leg edge is invisible in use. One that overhangs catches on rugs, thresholds and floor edges, and that is what pulls a glide off.
No. Measure each leg type and order the size that fits each. Mixing sizes across a set is normal, and better than forcing one size onto legs it overhangs.
Not the size, but the footprint matters more. On deep pile choose the largest slide that still sits within the leg base, because a wider face spreads the load and sinks in less.
Not as a single pad. Above 11-13/16″ (300 mm) the options are a rectangular strip, which runs to 20-1/16″ (510 mm), or a custom size by arrangement. Continuous bases and sled runners usually take strips rather than discs.
Slightly, and by a known amount: standard pads are 0.217″ (5.5 mm) thick, foam 1/4″ (7 mm) and heavy-duty 7/16″ (11 mm). If a table has to stay level with something beside it, fit the same type to every leg.
Yes, and it is the step most people skip. The face has to be clean, dry and free of old adhesive or felt residue. Wipe it with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. Then press firmly and leave it 48 hours before the furniture goes back into normal use.
A strip is a long rectangular pad, up to 20-1/16″ (510 mm). Discs and squares suit individual legs. Strips suit continuous bases, sled runners and long plinths, where a row of separate pads would leave gaps that still touch the floor.
Slide a steel rule into the open end and read the metal itself, or push a plug in from a set you already have and see which grips. Failing that, most domestic furniture tube is 0.039″ to 0.079″ (1 to 2 mm). Commercial and outdoor frames are usually thicker. If you are guessing, an end cap avoids the question entirely because it fits over the outside.
The wall is thinner than the plug was sized for, so the ribs are not biting. Check the wall thickness against the product listing and move to the version rated for a thinner wall, or fit an end cap over the outside instead.
Yes. Oval, half-oval and ellipse are all stocked, along with round, square and rectangular. Measure the wide dimension first, then the narrow one, and filter by shape.
Yes. Angled plugs are built with the base set at an angle so it still meets the floor flat on a leg leaning between 9 and 22 degrees. Filter to the angled variant rather than forcing a straight plug in.
It depends on the stem length you pick and how deep the thread runs into the leg. The stem screws in and out; a longer stem gives more travel. The purpose is taking a wobble out of an uneven floor, not changing the height of a piece by any real amount.
Take out the foot that is already there and measure across the threaded part, or read it off the packaging. M8 is the most common on furniture. If nothing is fitted and the leg is a hollow tube, you need a threaded insert first and the insert determines the thread.
The base pivots rather than staying rigid to the stem. Tilt gives up to 9 degrees, which covers a floor that slopes slightly. Ball-Joint pivots in any direction, which suits a leg that is not square to the floor in the first place.
Yes. Fit three and the fourth leg still rests on the floor, so the piece rocks on whichever leg is proud. Fit every point that touches the floor, and add a couple of spares while you are there.
Yes. Unlike a flat leg base, a runner is a curved surface and the bore of the glide is molded to one diameter and one cross-section. A saddle sized for a smaller tube will not seat down; one sized larger rocks on it and works the mounting loose. Read the tube, not the chair.
A pad slot holds the PA6 pad as a separate piece, so it lifts out and a fresh one drops in without touching the glide or the frame. That is the reason to choose a slot version for a busy room.
Parts that go between your furniture leg and the floor to stop scratches, dents, and noise. Count the places the frame actually rests on the floor. Two runners with two contact points each comes to four. A frame that curves down at both ends of each runner can take six, and mixing Mid-Runner with Corner across the same chair is normal.

Nail-on, self-adhesive, plugs and feet
No pre-drilling is needed. The rivet is tubular and thin, so it parts the wood fibers rather than cutting them out, and it hammers into the same spot again if you ever replace the glide.
Nail-on glides pull out and leave a small mark in the wood. Self-adhesive glides release with gentle heat from a hairdryer, then any residue wipes off with isopropyl alcohol.

For Mid-Runner, Corner and End glides, yes. The screw passes through the tube wall, and most steel frames take a self-tapping screw without trouble. Where drilling is out of the question, a Clip-On holds by grip alone and can be repositioned later.

What the face is made of and where it belongs
No. The face is smooth and the load spreads across the whole disc, so it rides on top of the pile rather than digging into it. It is the fiber face on a glide that catches in carpet, which is why glides are not used there.
Yes. Grout channels are exactly where a fiber glide dips and catches. The hard ABS face bridges the line and keeps moving. The same applies to slate, textured tile, brick and broom-finish concrete.
On carpet, no. The pile still provides resistance and the slide only removes the drag. On a hard floor the movement is freer, which is the point for chairs that get repositioned but worth knowing for anything you would rather stayed put.
Yes, if the same furniture moves between them. Slides are built for carpet and for rough hard floors; glides are built for smooth sealed floors. A slide will move on hardwood but a glide is quieter and gentler on the finish, so most people fit slides to the carpet-room furniture and glides to the rest.
It closes the tube and stops a bare metal edge cutting into the surface, which is most of the job. For a smooth hard floor, choose a version with a pad fitted or a slot to take one. The plain versions are fine on carpet.
The plain bases are hard plastic and are meant for sitting still. On a smooth sealed floor, choose a version with a pad fitted. For a floor that feels slippery, the anti-slip versions use a TPE face that grips instead of sliding.
Choose a stainless steel version. The standard rod is zinc-plated steel, which is fine indoors but will corrode in damp, coastal or washdown conditions. Stainless is available on both standard and low-profile bases.
One is enough for a home chair or light commercial use. Two spread the load and stop the glide twisting on the tube, which is worth having anywhere chairs get dragged all day. Clip-Ons have no holes at all.
It will sit there, but its body is shaped for the bend and the mounting is placed to suit the curve, so it meets the floor at a slight angle. Keep Mid-Runner on the straight and Corner on the bend and both sit flat.
Glides carry a smooth PA6 polyamide face and belong on smooth hard floors. Slides (hard ABS surface) are for carpet, carpet tile, area rugs, and rough hard floors with grout lines. The floor type decides which one you need.
