Case study 01 · Restaurant dining room

The white glide was softer than the carpet it sat on.

The situation

A dining room on commercial carpet, chairs fitted with the standard white PTFE glide. The glides were wearing through, catching, and leaving the chairs hard to move.

What the material says

PTFE sits around 50 to 60 on the Shore D scale, and the rubberized layer beneath it is softer still. The nylon fiber in a commercial carpet, chosen for abrasion resistance, sits around 100 to 120 Rockwell R; polypropylene around 92. Different scales, same order: the glide was the softest thing in the room, so it wore instead of the floor.

What was done

Four chairs were refitted with a hard-faced slide chosen for the carpet as the trial, with the heavier tables assessed next. The photographs on this page are the parts that came off.

Case study 02 · Hotel lobby, children’s area

Three generations of glides failed on the same stools before the right one went on.

The history

First, a PTFE slide. It wore down on the carpet and, when it failed, left screws in the stool legs that had to be removed.

Second, a nail-based glide. These broke off and left exposed nails in the furniture, a risk to the floor every time a stool moved.

Third, a soft plastic glide. It wore quickly and broke at the nail attachment point, with the same result.

Fourth, the one recommended: a self-adhesive hard-faced glide, chosen to move smoothly across the floor while keeping enough resistance that a child cannot skate the stool away. That is the one in the photographs.

The lesson that held on every project since

A glide that works on hardwood will not automatically work on carpet, and a glide that survives a dining chair will not automatically survive a child on a stool. Match the face to the floor and the attachment to the use.
