Long rectangular bases warp, bow, and develop high spots that flat, rigid pads cannot follow. You press a Standard pad onto a bowed runner, and the adhesive contacts both ends but lifts in the middle. Every time someone sits down, the gap opens and closes, grinding the edge of the lifted pad into the finish. Rectangular foam self-adhesive furniture pads add an EVA closed-cell foam layer that conforms to the full length of the base, compressing at the high spots and filling gaps at the low spots. It picks up sand and grit from the floor and holds it there. Every time the chair moves, that grit is dragged across the finish. The pad is still doing its job, and it is the thing causing the damage.
