Extended Square Threaded Inserts

Extended square threaded inserts feature a longer insertion body for a deeper, more secure press-fit in thin-walled square tubes. When a standard-depth square threaded insert does not grip firmly enough to support a leveling foot under load, the extended body reaches deeper into the tube for more surface contact across all four walls. Same PA body and zinc-plated steel M8 nut as standard square threaded inserts. 2 sizes: 40 × 40 and 60 × 60 mm. Wall thickness 1 to 2 mm. Deep grip square threaded inserts for thin-walled square tubing. Black, grey, and white. Sold in multiples of 4.

Overview

Extended Square Threaded Inserts

Standard square threaded inserts hold firmly in most square tubes at 1 to 2 mm wall thickness. But on larger square tubes (40 × 40 and 60 × 60 mm) with walls at the thin end of the range, the larger cross-section creates more leverage on the insert body. A leveling foot loaded with heavy furniture weight can gradually push a standard-depth insert deeper into the tube or work it loose entirely. Extended square threaded inserts solve this with a longer insertion body that reaches deeper into the square tube for more grip surface across all four walls.

Same PA body, same zinc-plated steel M8 nut, same press-fit installation as standard square threaded inserts. The only difference is the body length. Extended square threaded inserts are deep grip square threaded inserts for 40 × 40 and 60 × 60 mm thin-walled square tubing where standard depth is not enough to anchor a leveling foot reliably. Black, grey, and white. Sold in multiples of 4.

Available Sizes: 2 Extended Square Threaded Inserts

Extended square threaded inserts are available in two sizes. Both use M8 thread and share the same extended-body design. The right extended insert matches your tube’s outside dimension and wall thickness.

40 × 40 mm / M8 / Extended

Wall: 1 to 2 mm. Extended body for deeper grip in thin-walled 40 × 40 mm tubes. Weight: 23.7 g (vs. 19.6 g for standard depth M8 in the same size). The 40 × 40 is the most common commercial table leg dimension where extended depth is needed. Black, grey, and white.

60 × 60 mm / M8 / Extended

Wall: 1 to 2 mm. Extended body for the largest standard square tube threaded insert. Weight: 34.7 g. The 60 × 60 mm size is only available in the extended version because the large cross-section requires deeper grip at 1 to 2 mm wall thickness. Black and grey.

For standard-depth inserts in 20 × 20 to 50 × 50 mm with M8, M10, and M12 threads, see square threaded inserts. For stainless steel nuts on 30 × 30 and 40 × 40 mm, see stainless steel square threaded inserts. For round tubes, see round threaded inserts. For rectangular tubes, see rectangular threaded inserts. When to Choose Extended Square Threaded Inserts

Not every 40 × 40 or 60 × 60 mm tube needs extended depth. The decision depends on wall thickness, furniture weight, and how much the leveling feet are stressed during use.

Choose extended when
  • The tube wall is at the thin end of the 1 to 2 mm range (closer to 1 mm)
  • The furniture is heavy (commercial tables, industrial workbenches, loaded shelving)
  • The furniture gets moved, adjusted, or relocated frequently
  • Standard-depth inserts in the same tube have worked loose or shifted under load
  • The tube is 60 × 60 mm (only available as extended)
Standard depth may be sufficient when
  • The 40 × 40 mm tube wall is at the thick end (closer to 2 mm)
  • The furniture is lightweight and the leveling foot carries minimal load
  • The furniture stays in one location and the feet are rarely adjusted
  • Use standard square threaded inserts for these applications (40 × 40 mm in M8, M10, M12)

How to Measure Your Tube

Two tube measurements plus the thread confirmation. Extended square threaded inserts require 40 × 40 or 60 × 60 mm outside dimension and 1 to 2 mm wall thickness. The thread is M8 only.

Step 1. Measure the tube dimension

Use calipers across one side of the square tube, outside edge to outside edge. Confirm both sides are equal. The dimension must be 40 or 60 mm.

Step 2. Measure the wall thickness

Use calipers at the tube end. The wall must be between 1 and 2 mm. Check the interior clearance: the extended body inserts deeper than standard, so confirm no welds, brackets, or bends obstruct the interior.

Step 3. Confirm M8 thread

Extended square threaded inserts are M8 only. Confirm your leveling foot uses an M8 threaded rod. For M10 or M12 on 40 × 40 mm at standard depth, use standard square threaded inserts.

How to Install Extended Square Threaded Inserts

Same press-fit installation as standard square threaded inserts, with more insertion resistance due to the longer body. A rubber mallet is strongly recommended. Align corners to corners, nut facing the floor, and tap until flush.

What you need
  • The correct extended square threaded insert (40 × 40 or 60 × 60 mm, M8)
  • A rubber mallet (strongly recommended)
  • Clean, dry tube ends free of burrs, weld spatter, or debris in all four corners
  • The M8 leveling foot (for installation after the insert is seated)
Installation steps
  1. Inspect the tube end. Remove burrs, sharp edges, and debris from all four interior walls and corners. Confirm the interior is clear for the extended insertion depth.
  2. Align the extended square threaded insert with the tube opening. Match corners to corners. The M8 nut faces outward (toward the floor).
  3. Press by hand as far as possible, then tap with a rubber mallet until the head sits flush with the tube edge. The extended body creates more friction than standard depth.
  4. Screw the M8 leveling foot into the nut. Turn clockwise to the desired height. Adjust each leg independently to level the furniture.
60 × 60 mm note: the 60 × 60 extended insert weighs 34.7 g, nearly double the standard 30 × 30 M8 insert. The heavier PA body and deeper engagement mean more insertion force is needed. Use a rubber mallet for all 60 × 60 installations.

What Extended Square Threaded Inserts Solve

The specific problem of insert retention under load in thin-walled large square tubing. The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) recommends protective measures on all furniture legs, and extended square threaded inserts ensure those measures stay in place when standard depth cannot hold under the compressive load of a leveling foot on large square tubes.

Secure anchor in large thin-walled square tubes

The primary function. On a 60 × 60 mm tube with 1 mm walls, the tube cross-section is large relative to the wall thickness. A leveling foot loaded with heavy furniture weight creates leverage that acts on the insert body. Standard depth provides limited grip surface on four thin walls. Extended square threaded inserts add grip surface across all four walls simultaneously. Extended depth square leveling inserts that hold where standard depth does not.

60 × 60 mm coverage

Standard square threaded inserts go up to 50 × 50 mm. The 60 × 60 mm size is only available as an extended insert. Without the extended version, 60 × 60 mm square tubing would have no threaded insert option in the range. Extended insertion square inserts that bring the largest common square tube size into the leveling system.

All standard benefits maintained

Tube sealing, moisture protection, noise dampening. The extended body does not change any of these. The PA body seals the tube opening. The zinc-plated M8 nut provides the threaded connection. Unlike leaving heavy furniture on unleveled bare metal legs, the insert stays in place and supports the leveling foot because the extended body prevents the loosening that would eliminate the threaded connection.

Reduced maintenance on heavy commercial furniture

Heavy commercial tables, industrial workbenches, and conference tables with 40 × 40 or 60 × 60 mm legs create significant sustained load on the insert. Every time a standard insert works loose, the leveling foot loses its anchor and the furniture drops to bare metal on the floor. Extended square threaded inserts reduce this by holding more securely. Square threaded inserts thin wall tubes need for reliable long-term leveling support.

Materials and Construction

Same two-material construction as all square threaded inserts. PA body for tube grip and load transfer. Zinc-plated steel M8 nut for the threaded connection. The body is longer to provide deeper engagement.

Extended PA Body Deep four-wall grip

The PA body extends deeper into the tube than standard square threaded inserts. On the 40 × 40 extended, the body weighs 23.7 g (vs. 19.6 g for standard M8). On the 60 × 60, the body weighs 34.7 g. The additional PA material provides more grip surface on all four interior walls and four corners. The PA compound is the same: high tensile strength, chemical resistance, and temperature stability from -40 °C to 85 °C.

  • Extended depth on all four walls and four corners simultaneously
  • More PA surface area for stronger friction grip under heavy loads
  • 40 × 40: black, grey, white. 60 × 60: black, grey
Fe HDG (Zinc-Plated Steel) M8 Nut Threaded connection

Identical M8 nut to the standard square threaded insert. Same thread pitch. Same zinc plating. Same corrosion resistance. The extended body affects tube grip, not thread performance. Any M8 leveling foot that works with a standard square insert works with the extended version.

  • M8 thread on both 40 × 40 and 60 × 60 mm
  • Zinc-plated: corrosion resistant for indoor use
  • Compatible with all M8 leveling feet

Extended vs. Standard: Weight and Depth Comparison

The additional PA material in the extended body adds measurable weight and insertion depth compared to the standard version. This translates directly to more grip surface on the tube interior.

40 × 40 mm comparison

Standard M8: 19.6 g. Extended M8: 23.7 g. The extended version adds 4.1 g of PA material, which translates to approximately 20% more body length and grip surface on all four interior walls. The heavier body also adds slightly more mass to the tube end, which can help dampen vibration. For most furniture applications, this weight difference is negligible to the overall furniture weight.

60 × 60 mm (extended only)

34.7 g. No standard-depth version exists for comparison because the 60 × 60 mm cross-section at 1 to 2 mm wall thickness requires extended depth for adequate grip. The 34.7 g weight is the heaviest insert in the square range, reflecting the larger PA body needed to grip the four 60 mm interior walls securely across the extended depth. Even at this weight, the insert adds less than 140 g to a four-legged table.

Extended Square Threaded Inserts vs. Other Options

If your large square tube furniture needs adjustable leveling with extra-secure retention, here is how extended square threaded inserts compare.

vs. Standard Square Threaded Inserts

Standard square threaded inserts in 40 × 40 mm come in M8, M10, and M12 at standard depth. If standard depth holds firmly in your 40 × 40 tube, there is no need for extended. If the insert works loose under load, switch to extended. For 60 × 60 mm, extended is the only option.

vs. Stainless Steel Square Threaded Inserts

Stainless steel square threaded inserts replace the zinc nut with stainless steel for corrosion resistance. They are available in 30 × 30 and 40 × 40 mm at standard depth. Stainless addresses corrosion. Extended addresses retention. Different problems, different solutions. If you need both extended depth and stainless steel, contact Business Solutions.

vs. Extended Round Threaded Inserts

Extended round threaded inserts solve the same retention problem on round Ø 35 mm tubes. Same concept, different tube shape. Match the insert shape to the tube shape. Round for round. Square for square.

Where Extended Square Threaded Inserts Work Best

Extended square threaded inserts are designed for 40 × 40 and 60 × 60 mm hollow square tubing that needs a threaded M8 connection with extra-secure retention for adjustable leveling feet.

Ideal applications
  • Heavy commercial tables with 40 × 40 mm square legs on uneven floors
  • Industrial workbenches and assembly tables with 40 × 40 or 60 × 60 mm legs
  • Conference tables and large desks with heavy loads
  • Any 60 × 60 mm square tube that needs a leveling foot (extended is the only option)
  • Replacement for standard 40 × 40 M8 inserts that keep working loose
Not ideal for
  • Smaller square tubes: use standard square threaded inserts (20 × 20 to 50 × 50)
  • 40 × 40 mm tubes where standard depth holds: no need for extended
  • M10 or M12 on 40 × 40: use standard depth in those threads
  • Round or rectangular tubes: use shape-specific extended inserts (round) or standard inserts (rectangular)

Where People Use Extended Square Threaded Inserts

Anywhere 40 × 40 or 60 × 60 mm hollow square furniture legs need leveling feet with extra-secure retention in thin-walled tubing.

Commercial and industrial

Heavy conference tables, industrial workbenches, laboratory tables, commercial kitchen prep tables, and retail fixture bases with 40 × 40 or 60 × 60 mm square legs. In these environments, the furniture carries substantial weight and the leveling feet are adjusted or stressed regularly. Extended square threaded inserts provide the anchor strength that standard depth cannot on thin-walled large square tubing. The four-wall grip distributes the extended contact evenly across all four interior surfaces, which is more stable than the continuous-curve grip of round inserts at comparable depths. Available in bulk for manufacturing runs. For commercial pricing, visit Business Solutions.

Residential and institutional

Large dining tables, home office desks, and institutional furniture with 40 × 40 mm or 60 × 60 mm square legs on uneven residential or institutional floors. The 60 × 60 mm size handles the heaviest residential tables, including stone-top dining tables and large conference-style home office desks where the table weight alone creates significant load on the leveling system. For leveling feet to pair with these inserts, browse adjustable leveling feet with M8 thread. For non-leveling legs on the same furniture, standard square tube plugs seal the tube without a threaded connection. On furniture where some legs need leveling and others do not, mix extended square threaded inserts on the leveling legs with standard plugs on the non-leveling legs.

Maintenance and Inspection

Extended square threaded inserts require less frequent retention checks than standard-depth inserts in the same tube because the deeper grip is more resistant to loosening. Check every 6 to 12 months that the insert remains seated and the leveling foot is tight. On heavy furniture that gets moved frequently, inspect after each relocation.

If an extended insert does come loose, it usually indicates a tube interior issue (debris, wall deformation, or corrosion) that prevents full insertion depth. Remove the insert, inspect and clean the tube interior, and reinstall. Extended square threaded inserts are sold in multiples of 4 for convenient replacement stocking. The PA body and zinc-plated nut do not require lubrication or chemical treatment under normal indoor conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are only 40 × 40 and 60 × 60 mm available in extended?

These are the sizes where thin-walled tubing is most common and where the larger tube cross-section creates more leverage that can work a standard-depth insert loose. Smaller square tubes (20 × 20 to 30 × 30 mm) are typically manufactured with walls thick enough for standard-depth grip. The 60 × 60 mm size is only available as extended because standard depth does not provide adequate retention for this large cross-section at 1 to 2 mm wall.

The standard 40 × 40 mm insert comes in M8, M10, and M12. Why is the extended version M8 only?

M8 is the most common leveling foot thread for furniture in the 40 × 40 and 60 × 60 mm tubing range. For M10 and M12 threads at standard depth, standard square threaded inserts in 40 × 40 mm provide adequate grip in most wall thicknesses. For custom extended inserts with M10 or M12, contact Business Solutions.

Is the 60 × 60 mm extended insert available in white?

Currently black and grey only. The 40 × 40 mm extended comes in black, grey, and white. For white in 60 × 60 mm, contact Business Solutions for custom color options with minimum order quantities.

How does the extended body affect the leveling foot's adjustment range?

It does not. The M8 nut is in the same position relative to the tube end. The extended body reaches deeper into the tube behind the nut, providing more grip. The leveling foot screws into the nut at the same depth as standard. The adjustment range is determined by the leveling foot’s threaded rod length, not the insert body depth.

Can I use an extended 40 × 40 mm insert in place of a standard one?

Yes. The tube dimension, wall range, and M8 thread are the same. The extended body simply grips deeper. If you are replacing a standard insert that kept working loose, the extended version solves the retention problem. The extra insertion effort during installation is the only tradeoff.
