Overview

Square End Caps

Square tube plugs press inside the tube. Square end caps slide over the outside. When you need to finish a square tube or solid bar end and there is no hollow interior to press into, or when you want external coverage that wraps around the tube end instead of sitting flush inside it, square end caps are the solution. The cap slides over the outside of the square tube or bar, grips through friction, and creates a clean, finished endpoint. External coverage for square profiles that plugs cannot reach or where an outer shell is the preferred approach.

PE construction with a friction-fit interior that grips all four outer walls of the tube or bar. Square end caps are external square tube caps for 16 × 16 and 25 × 25 mm square tubing and solid bar stock. End caps for square tube legs on lightweight furniture, wire shelving, display fixtures, racks, and any application with small to mid-size square profiles. Black and white. 2 sizes, 3 SKUs. Sold in multiples of 4.

Available Sizes: 2 Square End Caps

Square end caps are available in two sizes that fit common small to mid-size square tubing. Both sizes share the same PE construction and 3 mm head thickness. The right square end cap matches the outside dimension of your tube or bar.

Fits 16 × 16 mm (0.63 × 0.63 in.)

Cap outer dimension: 22 × 22 mm. Insertion depth: 16 mm. Head thickness: 3 mm. The smaller size for lightweight chair frames, wire shelving uprights, display fixture tubing, and narrow square profiles. Available in black and white.

Fits 25 × 25 mm (0.98 × 0.98 in.)

Cap outer dimension: 28 × 28 mm. Insertion depth: 26 mm. Head thickness: 3 mm. The larger size for standard furniture tubing, commercial fixtures, and display structures. Deeper insertion depth for a more secure hold. Available in black.

For larger square profiles that need an internal plug (cleaner profile, no visible cap from the side), square tube plugs come in 16 sizes from 13 × 13 to 100 × 100 mm. For round profiles, see round end caps. For custom square end cap sizes or colors, contact Business Solutions.

How to Measure Your Tube or Bar for Square End Caps

One measurement: the outside dimension of the square tube or bar. Square end caps slide over the outside, so the outside dimension is all that matters. Wall thickness is irrelevant because the cap does not enter the tube interior. This makes square end caps simpler to size than internal tube plugs.

Step 1. Measure the outside dimension

Use calipers or a ruler across one side of the square tube or bar, outside edge to outside edge. Confirm both sides are equal. Square end caps are available for 16 × 16 and 25 × 25 mm.

Step 2. Check clearance

The cap adds to the outer profile at the endpoint (22 × 22 mm on the 16 × 16 cap, 28 × 28 mm on the 25 × 25 cap). Confirm this wider dimension does not interfere with adjacent legs, brackets, or stacking geometry.

Step 3. Confirm the depth

The 16 × 16 cap inserts 16 mm. The 25 × 25 cap inserts 26 mm. The tube or bar must extend at least that far beyond any obstruction for the cap to seat fully.

Hollow or solid: square end caps work on both. Square tube plugs require a hollow interior. If your application uses solid square bar stock, square end caps are the only option in the range for an external finish. No need to measure wall thickness.

How to Install Square End Caps

Push on with corner alignment. Square end caps must slide onto the tube with corners aligned to corners, the same way square tube plugs require corner alignment during insertion. Once aligned, the cap slides down and grips through friction along the full insertion depth.

What you need
  • The correct square end cap matched to your tube or bar dimension (16 × 16 or 25 × 25 mm)
  • Clean, dry tube or bar ends free of burrs, paint drips, or weld spatter
  • Optional: a small drop of adhesive for high-traffic applications
Installation steps
  1. Inspect the tube or bar end. Remove any burrs, sharp edges, weld spatter, or paint buildup from the outside surface and corners. Square profiles accumulate debris at the corners that can prevent the cap from seating.
  2. Align the square end cap with the tube or bar end. Match corners to corners. The open end of the cap faces the tube.
  3. Push the cap onto the tube or bar by hand. Apply even pressure across all four sides. Slide it down until the cap head sits against the tube end.
  4. For additional security, apply a small drop of cyanoacrylate or PE-compatible contact adhesive inside the cap before installation. This is optional and recommended only for high-traffic or vibration-heavy applications.
Removal: twist and pull from one corner. The PE body flexes enough to release the friction grip. If adhesive was used, gentle prying with a flat-head screwdriver from one corner provides leverage. Square end caps can be reinstalled if undamaged.

What Square End Caps Solve

The same problems as square tube plugs, but from the outside. The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) recommends protective measures on all furniture legs, and square end caps provide that protection on small to mid-size square tubes and bars where internal plugs are impractical or where external coverage is preferred.

Finished appearance on square profiles

An open square tube end exposes the hollow interior, any internal rust, weld marks, or manufacturing residue. A bare square bar end looks industrial and unfinished. Square end caps cover both with a smooth PE shell that signals a complete, intentional design. The cap wraps around all four outer faces, hiding the raw tube or bar end completely. Push-on square leg caps that finish the look without any tools.

Floor protection

A bare square tube puts four sharp metal edges and four sharp corners on the floor. Square end caps replace that contact with a smooth PE cap that distributes weight across a broader area (22 × 22 mm for the 16 × 16 cap, 28 × 28 mm for the 25 × 25 cap). The broader base compared to the bare tube means less pressure per square millimeter. Unlike leaving metal edges unprotected, the PE cap prevents scratching. For dedicated PA6 scratch protection, apply a square self-adhesive furniture pad to the cap base.

Safety

Exposed square tube and bar ends have four sharp corners that concentrate impact risk. On shelving at knee height, on furniture frames at hand level, and on display fixtures in public spaces, an uncapped square end is a cut and puncture hazard. Square end caps cover all four corners with rounded PE edges. In retail environments, schools, healthcare facilities, and homes with children, capping every exposed square end is basic safety practice. These are the square tube end caps PE external coverage that safety-conscious environments require.

Moisture sealing on hollow tubes

On hollow square tubing, square end caps cover the open end from the outside and prevent moisture, debris, and insects from entering. The cap wraps around the tube rather than sealing from inside like a plug. On steel tubing, this external coverage still protects against internal corrosion. On solid bars, moisture sealing is not relevant, but the finished appearance and safety benefits still apply.

Materials and Construction

Same PE (polyethylene) used across the entire tube plug and end cap range. Square end caps are molded from a single piece of PE with no joints, seams, or separate components. The cap wall is engineered for a friction fit on the specified square tube or bar dimension.

PE Cap Body External fit

The cap slides over all four outer walls of the square tube or bar. The inner surfaces grip through friction along the full insertion depth. The 3 mm head creates a smooth, flat endpoint. Square end caps use the same PE compound that resists UV, chemicals, moisture, and impact across all our products.

  • External friction fit: grips all four outer walls simultaneously
  • 16 × 16 cap: 16 mm insertion depth, 22 × 22 mm outer footprint
  • 25 × 25 cap: 26 mm insertion depth, 28 × 28 mm outer footprint
  • 3 mm head thickness on both sizes
  • Black and white (16 × 16); black (25 × 25)
  • UV resistant, moisture resistant, impact resistant
  • Works on hollow tubes and solid bars

Square End Caps vs. Square Tube Plugs

The fundamental choice: external or internal. Here is how square end caps compare to square tube plugs and other options.

vs. Square Tube Plugs (Internal)

Square tube plugs press inside the tube with ribbed walls. They sit flush and are invisible from the side. Square end caps slide over the outside and are visible. Tube plugs do not change the outer profile. The caps add 6 mm (16 × 16) or 3 mm (25 × 25) per side to the endpoint footprint. Choose tube plugs for a flush finish on larger hollow tubing. Choose square end caps for small profiles, solid bars, or when external coverage is preferred.

vs. Rubber or Silicone Leg Tips

Generic square rubber tips are difficult to find in precise sizes. They stretch, deform, and fall off. Square end caps are precision-molded for 16 × 16 and 25 × 25 mm with a specific friction fit engineered for long-term retention. The PE does not stretch out, crack, or degrade with UV exposure or cleaning chemicals.

vs. Welding a Plate

Welding a steel plate over the square tube end provides a permanent seal but requires welding equipment, grinding, and refinishing. It is not removable. Square end caps push on by hand in seconds, are removable and replaceable, and cost a fraction of welding labor.

vs. Round End Caps

Round end caps fit round tubes and rods. Square end caps fit square tubes and bars. Always match the cap shape to the tube shape. A round cap will not grip a square profile and a square cap will not grip a round profile.

Floor Compatibility for End Cap Base Contact

When used on floor-contact legs, the PE base of the cap contacts the floor directly. PE is smoother and softer than bare metal, making it adequate for basic floor protection on most surfaces. The PE base works on hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile, polished concrete, and cork without scratching under normal use. However, PE is harder than PA6 fiber. On scratch-sensitive floors like engineered hardwood or luxury vinyl, apply a square self-adhesive furniture pad to the cap base for dedicated PA6 protection.

On rough hard surfaces like textured tile, stamped concrete, or slate, the PE base may catch on surface irregularities. For those floors, furniture slides with ABS surfaces handle the texture better. On carpet and soft flooring, the caps provide adequate contact without any additional treatment. The broader cap footprint (22 × 22 mm or 28 × 28 mm) compared to the bare tube dimension means the caps distribute weight across a larger area than the bare tube alone, which reduces floor pressure regardless of floor type.

Where Square End Caps Work Best

Square end caps are designed for small to mid-size square tubes and bars that need a finished, safe, protected endpoint. The external fit means they work on both hollow and solid profiles.

Ideal applications
  • Wire shelving and storage racks with 16 × 16 or 25 × 25 mm square uprights
  • Display fixtures and retail racks with small square tubing
  • Lightweight furniture frames (side tables, plant stands, accent furniture)
  • Garden and greenhouse structures with square tubing
  • Solid square bar stock used in furniture, fixtures, or architectural elements
  • Any 16 × 16 or 25 × 25 mm square tube or bar end that is exposed, sharp, or unfinished
Not ideal for
  • Larger square profiles: use square tube plugs (16 sizes, 13 × 13 to 100 × 100 mm) for a flush, invisible finish
  • Applications where the added cap dimension is a problem (tight clearances, stacking)
  • Heavy-duty floor contact on large furniture: use tube plugs with square self-adhesive furniture glides
  • Rectangular profiles: the cap must match the tube shape exactly

Square Tube Plugs and End Caps at a Glance

Two mounting methods for the same goal: finishing, sealing, and protecting square tube ends.

Internal (Tube Plugs)

Press inside the tube. Flush, invisible from the side. Requires hollow tube. 16 sizes, 13 × 13 to 100 × 100 mm. Black, grey, white.

External (End Caps) ← You are here.

Slide over the outside. Visible from the side. Works on hollow and solid. 16 × 16 and 25 × 25 mm. Black and white.

Where People Use Square End Caps

Anywhere 16 × 16 or 25 × 25 mm square tubing or solid bar has exposed ends that need a finished, safe appearance. Square end caps are the simplest finishing solution for small square profiles: push on, done.

Residential and commercial

Wire shelving in kitchens, garages, and storage rooms. Retail display racks and point-of-sale fixtures. Lightweight side tables, plant stands, and accent furniture with square metal frames. On commercial shelving units with multiple exposed ends per shelf level, the caps add up quickly. Available in bulk for manufacturing runs and commercial fit-outs. For commercial pricing, visit Business Solutions.

Safety-critical environments

Schools, healthcare facilities, childcare centers, and retail spaces where exposed sharp square metal ends create a liability. The four corners of an uncapped square tube are sharper than a round tube end and pose a greater puncture risk. Square end caps cover all four corners with smooth, rounded PE. Many commercial and institutional environments require all exposed metal endpoints to be capped. For floor-contact ends that also need PA6 scratch protection, pair with square self-adhesive furniture pads.

Maintenance and Inspection

Square end caps require almost no maintenance. The PE material does not degrade under normal indoor or outdoor conditions. Check periodically that each cap remains fully seated on the tube or bar. On furniture that moves frequently, the friction fit may loosen over time. If a cap feels loose, remove it, wipe the tube surface clean, and reinstall. If it still slips after cleaning, add a small drop of adhesive inside the cap before reseating.

On commercial shelving and display fixtures, inspect every 3 to 6 months. On static residential furniture, an annual check is enough. Square end caps are sold in multiples of 4, so keeping spares on hand is practical. The PE surface does not stain, discolor, or absorb cleaning products. In environments where the caps are subject to impact or rough handling, inspect the corners for cracking or deformation. Replace any cap that no longer grips securely or has visible damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between square end caps and square tube plugs?

Square end caps slide over the outside of the tube. Square tube plugs press inside the tube. End caps are visible from the side and add to the outer dimension (22 × 22 mm for the 16 × 16 cap, 28 × 28 mm for the 25 × 25 cap). Tube plugs sit flush and are invisible from the side. Choose based on appearance preference and whether the tube interior is accessible.

Can square end caps fit on solid square bar stock?

Yes. Because square end caps slide over the outside, they work on both hollow tubes and solid bars. The cap grips the outer surface regardless of whether the profile is hollow or solid. This is a key advantage over tube plugs, which require a hollow interior.

How do square end caps stay on?

Friction fit. The cap’s inner dimension is slightly smaller than the tube’s outer dimension, so it grips the outside walls. The insertion depth (16 mm for the 16 × 16 cap, 26 mm for the 25 × 25 cap) provides substantial contact area. For additional security on high-traffic furniture, a small drop of adhesive inside the cap provides a bond.

Why is the 25 × 25 mm cap only available in black?

The 16 × 16 mm size comes in black and white. The 25 × 25 mm size is currently black only. For white or custom colors in the 25 × 25 mm size, contact Business Solutions. Custom color runs are possible with minimum order quantities.

Can I use square end caps as floor protectors?

Yes. The cap creates a PE floor-contact surface broader than the tube itself (22 × 22 mm contact area for a 16 × 16 mm tube). For additional scratch protection on hard floors, apply a square self-adhesive furniture pad to the cap base.
