Overview

Domed Head Round Tube Plugs

Standard flat head tube plugs seal and finish the tube end, but they add nothing to the look. Domed head round tube plugs give hollow round furniture legs a smooth, rounded decorative finish that turns a plain tube end into a deliberate design detail. The dome curves gently outward from the tube edge, creating a soft, organic endpoint on chair backs, exposed frame tops, fixture ends, and any tube end that is visible to the user. The most subtle of the decorative head profiles: enough curve to signal intentional design without dominating the visual.

Same PE construction and flexible ribbed body as the flat head range. Same press-fit installation. The only difference is the head: a smooth rounded dome instead of a flat disc. Domed head round tube plugs are decorative dome tube plugs for furniture where a subtle, rounded finish adds the right detail. 2 sizes: Ø 16 mm (R20 dome) and Ø 26 mm (R40 dome). Wall thickness 1.5 to 2 mm. Black and grey. Sold in multiples of 4.

Available Sizes: 2 Domed Head Round Tube Plugs

Domed head round tube plugs are available in two sizes, each with a dome radius proportional to the tube diameter. Both sizes share the same 1.5 to 2 mm wall thickness range and the same PE construction. The right domed head round tube plug matches your tube’s outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness.

Ø 16 mm, R20 Dome

Wall thickness: 1.5 to 2 mm. Dome radius: 20 mm (R20). The smaller size for lightweight chair backs, side chair frames, display fixture uprights, and narrow tubing where a subtle rounded finish completes the look. Available in black (RAL 9005) and grey (RAL 7040).

Ø 26 mm, R40 Dome

Wall thickness: 1.5 to 2 mm. Dome radius: 40 mm (R40). The larger size for standard furniture tubing, commercial chair backs, restaurant seating frames, and wider exposed tube ends. The broader R40 dome creates a flatter, more proportional curve on the larger diameter. Available in black (RAL 9005) and grey (RAL 7040).

For other diameters with a flat finish, flat head round tube plugs come in 26 sizes from Ø 10 to Ø 80 mm. For a sharper geometric peak, conical head round tube plugs are available in Ø 30 mm. For a full hemisphere, half-sphere head round tube plugs come in 5 sizes from Ø 16 to Ø 30 mm. For custom sizes or colors, contact Business Solutions.

How to Measure Your Tube for Domed Head Round Tube Plugs

Same two-measurement process as all tube plugs: outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness. Domed head round tube plugs require either Ø 16 mm or Ø 26 mm OD, both with 1.5 to 2 mm wall thickness. If your tube does not match these specifications, check the other head styles for a compatible size.

Step 1. Measure the OD

Use calipers or a ruler across the widest point of the tube opening. Outside edge to outside edge. The OD must be Ø 16 mm or Ø 26 mm for domed head round tube plugs to fit.

Step 2. Measure the wall thickness

Use calipers at the tube end, or calculate: (OD minus ID) / 2. The wall thickness must be between 1.5 mm and 2 mm for both sizes. Outside this range, the ribs will not grip properly.

Step 3. Select the size

Ø 16 mm OD gets the R20 dome. Ø 26 mm OD gets the R40 dome. Both require 1.5 to 2 mm wall. If your tube is Ø 16 mm with 1 to 1.5 mm walls, use a flat head plug in that wall thickness range instead.

Non-floor-contact application: since domed head round tube plugs are designed for visible, non-floor-contact tube ends, measure the tube that faces outward (chair back uprights, exposed frame tops, display fixture ends) rather than the floor-contact legs. Floor-contact legs are better served by flat head plugs or pad slot plugs.

How to Install Domed Head Round Tube Plugs

Same press-fit installation as all our tube plugs. The domed head does not change the process. At 1.5 to 2 mm wall thickness, most domed head round tube plugs press in by hand. A rubber mallet provides extra seating force if needed.

What you need
  • The correct domed head round tube plug matched to your OD (Ø 16 or Ø 26 mm)
  • A rubber mallet (optional, for extra seating force)
  • Clean, dry tube ends free of burrs or sharp edges
Installation steps
  1. Inspect the tube end. Remove any burrs, sharp edges, or debris from the inside of the tube opening.
  2. Align the domed head round tube plug with the tube opening. The rounded dome faces outward. The ribbed body faces into the tube.
  3. Press the plug into the tube by hand. The flexible ribs compress as the plug enters, then expand against the inner wall. Push until the dome base sits flush with the tube edge.
  4. If needed, tap the dome gently with a rubber mallet. Do not strike hard enough to flatten or deform the dome profile.
Removal: pry gently from one edge with a flat-head screwdriver or push from the opposite end of the tube if accessible. The PE body flexes without breaking. Domed head round tube plugs can often be reinstalled if the dome and ribs are undamaged.

What Domed Head Round Tube Plugs Solve

Every benefit of a standard tube plug, plus a rounded decorative profile that transforms exposed tube ends from unfinished holes into intentional design details. The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) recommends protective measures on all furniture legs, and domed head round tube plugs contribute by sealing the tube end even on non-floor-contact applications.

Decorative finish

The primary reason to choose domed over flat. The rounded profile adds a soft, organic visual to exposed tube ends. On retail fixtures, restaurant seating, hospitality furniture, and showroom displays, visible tube ends communicate design intention rather than incomplete assembly. Domed head round tube plugs are the most subtle of the decorative head options. The gentle curve reads as intentional without being dramatic. These are the decorative round tube plugs with a dome profile that blends with rather than dominates the frame design. Available in black and grey to match or contrast with the frame finish.

Tube sealing and moisture protection

Same sealed end as flat head plugs. The domed profile does not affect the seal. Moisture, debris, and insects are kept out of the tube interior. On steel tubing, this prevents the internal corrosion that weakens the structure from the inside out. Domed head round tube plugs protect the tube interior regardless of orientation. Unlike leaving furniture hardware unprotected, sealed ends extend the life of the frame.

Noise dampening

Same resonance reduction as flat head plugs. The PE body fills the tube opening and absorbs the vibration that hollow, open tubes amplify. In environments with many metal-framed chairs, every sealed tube end reduces the cumulative metallic noise. Domed head round tube plugs provide the same acoustic benefit as flat head plugs with an upgraded visual.

Not recommended for floor contact

The rounded dome concentrates floor contact at the dome center instead of distributing weight across a flat surface. For floor-contact legs, use flat head round tube plugs that spread load evenly. For floor contact with dedicated scratch protection, use pad slot round tube plugs with a PA6 pad insert. Domed head round tube plugs are designed for the visible tube ends that do not touch the floor.

Materials and Construction

Same PE (polyethylene) body and flexible ribbed grip as every tube plug in the range. The only difference is the head profile. Domed head round tube plugs are molded from a single piece of PE with no joints, seams, or separate components. Domed tube plugs for metal legs that combine a decorative rounded head with an engineered friction-fit body.

Domed PE Head Decorative finish

The dome curves outward from the tube edge in a smooth, seamless arc. The R20 dome (Ø 16 mm) has a tighter curve that reads as a subtle bump. The R40 dome (Ø 26 mm) has a broader, flatter arc that looks more proportional on the larger tube diameter. Both are smooth, molded surfaces with no seam lines. Domed head round tube plugs use the same PE compound that resists UV, chemicals, moisture, and impact across all our plug products.

  • R20 dome on Ø 16 mm: tighter radius, more pronounced curve relative to tube size
  • R40 dome on Ø 26 mm: broader radius, flatter proportional curve
  • Smooth, seamless molded surface on both sizes
  • Black (RAL 9005) and grey (RAL 7040)
  • UV resistant, moisture resistant, impact resistant
Flexible Internal Ribs Grip mechanism

Identical rib structure to the flat head range. The ribs compress during insertion and expand against the inner tube wall for a secure friction fit. At the 1.5 to 2 mm wall thickness specified for both sizes, the ribs engage firmly. No adhesive, no screws, no tools beyond an optional rubber mallet. Domed head round tube plugs rely entirely on mechanical grip.

  • Multiple ribs for distributed grip along the tube interior
  • Each rib compresses independently to adapt to wall thickness variations within the 1.5 to 2 mm range
  • Friction fit holds under vibration, movement, and sustained load
  • No adhesive required

Domed Head Round Tube Plugs vs. Other Head Styles

All head styles share the same PE body and ribbed grip. The choice comes down to appearance, floor contact needs, and the specific visual effect you want on the exposed tube end. Here is how domed head round tube plugs compare.

vs. Flat Head (Standard)

Flat head round tube plugs sit flush with the tube end. No protrusion, no visual accent. Domed head round tube plugs add a gentle rounded curve above the tube edge. Choose flat for floor-contact legs and utilitarian applications. Choose domed for visible, decorative tube ends where the subtle curve adds design value without dominating.

vs. Conical Head

Conical head round tube plugs taper to a sharper geometric peak. More angular, more architectural. Domed head round tube plugs have a softer, rounder profile. The dome is more traditional and organic. The cone is more modern and geometric. Conical is Ø 30 mm only. Domed comes in Ø 16 and Ø 26 mm.

vs. Half-Sphere Head

Half-sphere head round tube plugs have a full hemisphere that protrudes significantly above the tube edge. Bold, pronounced, unmistakable. Domed head round tube plugs are more restrained. The dome rises less and curves more gently. If you want subtle, choose domed. If you want dramatic, choose half-sphere. Half-sphere is available in 5 sizes from Ø 16 to Ø 30 mm.

vs. Anti-Slip TPE

Anti-slip TPE round tube plugs have a rubber head that grips the floor. Functional, not decorative. Domed head round tube plugs are decorative, not functional on floors. On the same piece of furniture, you might use anti-slip on the floor-contact legs and domed on the visible back uprights or armrest ends.

Where Domed Head Round Tube Plugs Work Best

Domed head round tube plugs are designed for tube ends that are visible to the user but do not contact the floor. The rounded profile is a decorative choice, not a functional floor-contact solution. Rounded head tube plugs for furniture that need a finished, professional look on every exposed tube end.

Ideal applications
  • Chair back uprights on metal dining chairs and restaurant seating (Ø 16 and Ø 26 mm cover most back tube profiles)
  • Exposed frame tops on display fixtures, retail shelving, and showroom furniture
  • Armrest tube ends on commercial and hospitality seating
  • Visible tube ends on garden structures, greenhouse frames, and architectural elements
  • Trade show and exhibition display frames
  • Any Ø 16 or Ø 26 mm hollow round tube end that is visible and does not contact the floor
Not ideal for
  • Floor-contact legs: the dome concentrates weight at the center. Use flat head plugs
  • Stackable furniture: any dome protrusion may interfere with nesting. Use flat head plugs
  • Tube diameters other than Ø 16 or Ø 26 mm: check conical (Ø 30 mm) or half-sphere (5 sizes, Ø 16 to 30 mm) for other sizes
  • Wall thickness outside 1.5 to 2 mm: the ribs will not grip properly

Where People Use Domed Head Round Tube Plugs

Anywhere Ø 16 or Ø 26 mm hollow round tubing has a visible, non-floor-contact end that deserves a finished, decorative look. Domed head round tube plugs add a soft, rounded finishing detail to commercial and residential furniture, fixtures, and structures.

Furniture and seating

Restaurant and hospitality seating where chair backs are visible to guests. Office and conference room chairs with exposed metal back uprights. Residential dining chairs with tubular metal frames in the Ø 16 to 26 mm range. Domed head round tube plugs pair naturally with flat head plugs on the same chair: domed on the visible back, flat on the floor-contact legs. For floor-contact legs that also need scratch protection, pair with round self-adhesive furniture glides.

Fixtures, displays, and structures

Retail display racks, showroom fixtures, exhibition frames, trade show structures, garden features, and architectural elements in the Ø 16 to 26 mm tubing range. The subtle dome adds a finished quality that flat plugs do not provide, without the more dramatic protrusion of conical or half-sphere heads. Available in bulk for manufacturing runs and commercial fit-outs. For commercial pricing, visit Business Solutions.

Maintenance and Inspection

Domed head round tube plugs require almost no maintenance. The PE material does not degrade under normal indoor or outdoor conditions. The domed surface can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Check periodically that the plug remains seated flush with the tube edge. The dome is the most exposed point: inspect for damage from impact or stacking contact. If the dome is chipped or deformed, replace the plug.

On commercial furniture that gets moved, stacked, or handled frequently, inspect every 3 to 6 months. On static fixtures and display structures, an annual visual check is enough. Domed head round tube plugs are sold in multiples of 4, so keeping spares on hand for commercial environments is practical. The PE surface does not stain, discolor, or absorb cleaning products.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do R20 and R40 mean on the domed head sizes?

R20 and R40 refer to the dome radius in millimeters. The Ø 16 mm plug has a 20 mm dome radius (R20), which produces a gentle, subtle curve. The Ø 26 mm plug has a 40 mm dome radius (R40), which produces a slightly flatter, broader dome proportional to the larger tube diameter. Both create a smooth, rounded appearance. The dome radius determines how pronounced the curve looks on the finished tube end.

What does the domed head look like compared to conical and half-sphere?

The dome is a gentle, rounded curve that rises modestly above the tube edge. Conical head plugs taper to a sharper geometric peak. Half-sphere head plugs have a full hemisphere that protrudes further. The dome is the most subtle of the three decorative profiles. It adds a finished look without dominating the visual.

Are domed head plugs suitable for floor-contact legs?

Not ideal. The rounded profile concentrates floor contact at the dome’s center instead of distributing weight across a flat surface. For floor-contact legs, use flat head round tube plugs that spread load evenly. For floor contact with scratch protection, use pad slot round tube plugs. Domed head round tube plugs are designed for visible, non-floor-contact tube ends.

Why are only black and grey available for domed head?

These two colors cover the vast majority of commercial and residential furniture frame finishes. Black matches dark steel, powder-coated, and anodized frames. Grey blends with brushed steel, aluminum, and lighter metallic finishes. For white or custom colors, contact us through Business Solutions.

Can I mix domed heads on visible ends with flat heads on floor-contact legs?

Yes. This is one of the most common applications. Use domed head round tube plugs on the chair back uprights, armrest ends, or exposed frame tops where the decorative profile is visible. Use flat head plugs on the floor-contact legs where load distribution matters. All head styles use the same PE body and ribbed grip.
