Overview

Domed Ellipse Tube Plugs

Standard ellipse tube plugs seal and finish the tube end with a flat profile that sits flush. That handles floor-contact legs and general applications. But on visible, non-floor-contact tube ends where the elliptical profile is a deliberate design choice, a flat plug adds nothing to the aesthetic. Domed ellipse tube plugs replace the flat head with a smooth, rounded dome that curves outward from the elliptical tube edge, following the tapered contour of the ellipse. The dome creates a raised, finished endpoint that turns a plain tube end into a design statement.

Same PE construction and flexible body as standard ellipse tube plugs. Same press-fit installation. The only difference is the head profile: a smooth dome instead of a flat disc. Domed ellipse tube plugs are rounded head ellipse tube plugs for furniture where a decorative finish on visible elliptical tube ends adds the right finishing touch. 2 sizes: 15 × 30 mm and 20 × 35 mm. Black, grey, and white. Sold in multiples of 4.

Available Sizes: 2 Domed Ellipse Tube Plugs

Domed ellipse tube plugs are available in 2 sizes. Each size has a dome proportional to the elliptical cross-section. Note that the larger size is 20 × 35 mm, which is a different tube dimension than the 20 × 40 mm used by the flat head and thin head ellipse variants. Measure your tube to confirm the correct match.

15 × 30 mm

Wall: 1.5 to 2 mm. Same tube size as the flat head ellipse plug. The dome follows the elongated 2:1 elliptical contour, rising to a proportional peak. Lightweight chair components, display fixture tubing, and narrow structural members. Black, grey, and white.

20 × 35 mm

Wall: 1 to 2 mm. A unique size that exists only in the domed variant. The 20 × 35 mm profile is slightly less elongated than the 2:1 ratio of the other ellipse sizes, creating a rounder dome. For standard dining chair legs, bar stools, and commercial seating. Black and white.

For flat head ellipse plugs on floor-contact legs, see ellipse tube plugs (15 × 30 and 20 × 40 mm). For thin head variants, see thin head ellipse tube plugs (15 × 30 and 20 × 40 mm). For oval tubes (rounded ends, not pointed), see domed oval tube plugs. For custom sizes, contact Business Solutions.

How to Measure Your Tube for Domed Ellipse Tube Plugs

Same three measurements as all ellipse tube plugs: short axis (width), long axis (length), and wall thickness. Domed ellipse tube plugs are available in 15 × 30 and 20 × 35 mm. Pay particular attention to the 20 × 35 dimension: this is not the same as 20 × 40 mm.

Step 1. Measure the short axis

Use calipers across the narrowest point of the elliptical opening, outside edge to outside edge. The short axis must be 15 or 20 mm for domed ellipse tube plugs.

Step 2. Measure the long axis

Use calipers across the widest point, through the pointed ends. The long axis must be 30 mm (for the 15 mm short axis) or 35 mm (for the 20 mm short axis). If your long axis measures 40 mm, use a flat head or thin head ellipse plug instead.

Step 3. Measure the wall thickness

Use calipers at the tube end. The 15 × 30 requires 1.5 to 2 mm wall. The 20 × 35 requires 1 to 2 mm wall.

20 × 35 is not 20 × 40: the domed ellipse plug in 20 × 35 mm will not fit a 20 × 40 mm tube. The 5 mm difference on the long axis means the plug body is too short for the tube opening. If your tube is 20 × 40, use a flat head ellipse plug or thin head ellipse plug in that size.

How to Install Domed Ellipse Tube Plugs

Same press-fit installation as standard ellipse tube plugs. The domed head does not change the process. Align the pointed ends of the plug with the pointed ends of the tube, then press in. The dome faces outward.

What you need
  • The correct domed ellipse tube plug matched to your short axis, long axis, and wall thickness
  • A rubber mallet (optional, for snug fits)
  • Clean, dry tube ends free of burrs or debris
Installation steps
  1. Inspect the tube end. Remove any burrs, sharp edges, or debris from the inside, particularly at the pointed ends where the curve tightens.
  2. Align the domed ellipse tube plug with the tube opening. Match the pointed ends of the plug to the pointed ends of the tube. The dome faces outward.
  3. Press the plug into the tube by hand. The flexible walls compress as the plug enters, then expand against the elliptical interior.
  4. If needed, tap the dome base ring gently with a rubber mallet. Tap around the perimeter, not on the dome peak itself, to avoid deforming the rounded profile.
Removal: pry gently from one of the pointed ends with a flat-head screwdriver. The tapered ends provide natural leverage points on the elliptical profile. The PE body flexes without breaking. Domed ellipse tube plugs can often be reinstalled if the dome and body are undamaged.

What Domed Ellipse Tube Plugs Solve

Every benefit of a standard ellipse tube plug, plus a rounded decorative profile on visible tube ends. The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) recommends protective measures on all furniture legs, and domed ellipse tube plugs contribute by sealing the tube end even on non-floor-contact applications.

Decorative finish on elliptical profiles

The primary reason to choose domed over flat or thin head. Elliptical tubing is already a design-forward profile choice: sleeker and more dynamic than round or rectangular. A domed head amplifies that intent by adding a sculpted, raised endpoint. The dome follows the elliptical contour, curving smoothly from the wide center to the tapered pointed ends. Decorative ellipse tube plugs that complete the design language of contemporary elliptical furniture. The ellipse tube plugs rounded head that architects and designers specify for visible tube endpoints.

Tube sealing and moisture protection

Same sealed end as flat head ellipse plugs. The dome does not affect the seal. Moisture, debris, and insects are kept out of the tube interior. On steel tubing, sealed ends prevent internal corrosion. Domed ellipse tube plugs protect the tube interior regardless of whether the tube end faces up, outward, or down. Unlike leaving furniture hardware unprotected, sealed ends extend frame life.

Noise dampening

Same resonance reduction as flat head ellipse plugs. The PE body fills the elliptical tube opening and absorbs the vibration that hollow tubes amplify. The dome does not change the acoustic properties. Every sealed tube end reduces the cumulative metallic noise in environments with many metal-framed chairs or fixtures.

Not recommended for floor contact

The rounded dome concentrates floor contact at the dome center instead of distributing weight across the full elliptical area. For floor-contact elliptical legs, use flat head ellipse tube plugs that spread load evenly. For a minimal-profile option on floor contact legs, thin head ellipse tube plugs sit nearly flush. Domed ellipse tube plugs are designed for the visible tube ends that do not touch the floor.

Materials and Construction

Same PE (polyethylene) body and flexible grip as every ellipse tube plug in the range. Domed ellipse tube plugs are molded from a single piece of PE with no joints, seams, or separate components. The dome follows the elliptical contour, which means the dome itself is not symmetrical: it is wider on the long axis and narrower on the short axis, with the most prominent curvature at the pointed ends.

Domed PE Head Decorative finish

The dome curves outward from the elliptical tube edge. The dome height is proportional to the tube size. On the 15 × 30 mm, the dome is subtle. On the 20 × 35 mm, the slightly rounder aspect ratio allows a more prominent dome. Both are smooth, seamless molded surfaces with no seam lines along the curve.

  • Dome follows the elliptical contour: tapered at the pointed ends, wider at the center
  • Proportional dome height scales with tube size
  • Smooth, seamless molded surface
  • 15 × 30: black, grey, white. 20 × 35: black, white
  • UV resistant, moisture resistant, impact resistant
Flexible Internal Walls Grip mechanism

Same variable-radius grip as standard ellipse tube plugs. The walls follow the elliptical contour with tight curvature at the pointed ends and gentler curvature at the wide center. Domed plugs for elliptical legs use the same grip engineering as flat and thin head variants.

  • Variable-radius grip adapts to continuously changing elliptical curvature
  • Continuous perimeter contact with no gaps, including at the pointed ends
  • Friction fit holds under vibration, movement, and load
  • No adhesive required

Domed Ellipse Tube Plugs vs. Other Head Styles

All ellipse plug variants share the same PE body. The choice comes down to head profile, tube size, and whether the tube end contacts the floor or faces outward.

vs. Flat Head Ellipse Tube Plugs

Flat head ellipse tube plugs sit flush with the tube end. No protrusion, no visual accent. Available in 15 × 30 and 20 × 40 mm. Domed ellipse tube plugs add a gentle rounded curve above the tube edge. Choose flat for floor-contact legs, utilitarian tube ends, and 20 × 40 mm tubes. Choose domed for visible, decorative ends on 15 × 30 or 20 × 35 mm tubes.

vs. Thin Head Ellipse Tube Plugs

Thin head ellipse tube plugs sit nearly flush with the tube end for a minimal-profile finish. Available in 15 × 30 and 20 × 40 mm. Thin head is the opposite of domed: minimal profile vs. raised profile. Choose thin for applications where the plug should be as unnoticeable as possible. Choose domed when you want the plug to be a visible design element.

vs. Domed Oval Tube Plugs

Domed oval tube plugs fit oval tubes with rounded, blunt ends. Domed ellipse tube plugs fit elliptical tubes with pointed, tapered ends. Same decorative concept, different tube geometry. The domed profile on an ellipse plug tapers at the pointed ends, which an oval dome does not.

vs. Domed Round Tube Plugs

Domed round tube plugs fit round tubes. The dome on a round plug is symmetrical. The dome on an ellipse plug follows the asymmetric elliptical contour. Always match plug shape to tube shape.

Floor Compatibility Note

Domed ellipse tube plugs are not recommended for floor contact because the dome concentrates weight at the center peak. For floor-contact elliptical legs on the same furniture, use flat head ellipse tube plugs that distribute weight across the full elliptical area. For additional PA6 scratch protection on any flat head plug, apply a round self-adhesive furniture pad to the plug head.

Where Domed Ellipse Tube Plugs Work Best

Domed ellipse tube plugs are designed for visible, non-floor-contact elliptical tube ends where a decorative raised finish adds value to the furniture’s appearance.

Ideal applications
  • Chair back uprights on dining and restaurant seating with elliptical tubing
  • Armrest tube ends on commercial and hospitality chairs
  • Exposed frame tops on display fixtures, showroom furniture, and exhibition stands
  • Visible tube ends on architectural elements with elliptical profiles
  • Any 15 × 30 or 20 × 35 mm elliptical tube end that is visible and does not contact the floor
Not ideal for
  • Floor-contact legs: dome concentrates weight at center. Use flat head or thin head
  • Stackable furniture: dome protrusion may interfere with nesting
  • 20 × 40 mm elliptical tubes: domed is only 20 × 35. Use flat or thin head for 20 × 40
  • Oval tubes: use domed oval tube plugs
  • Round tubes: use domed round tube plugs

Where People Use Domed Ellipse Tube Plugs

Anywhere elliptical tubing has visible, non-floor-contact tube ends that deserve a finished, decorative look rather than a plain flat cap.

Furniture and seating

Restaurant and hospitality seating where elliptical chair backs face guests. Office and conference room chairs with exposed elliptical back uprights. Residential dining chairs with elliptical metal frames where the tube ends are visible at the top of the backrest or at armrest endpoints. Domed ellipse tube plugs pair with flat head plugs on the same chair: domed on the visible back, flat on the floor-contact legs. For floor-contact legs that also need scratch protection, apply round self-adhesive furniture pads.

Fixtures, displays, and structures

Retail display racks, showroom fixtures, exhibition frames, and architectural elements with elliptical tubing. The dome adds a premium quality signal to any visible elliptical tube end. The elliptical profile is already a design-forward choice, and the dome amplifies that intent. In trade show and exhibition environments, domed ellipse tube plugs signal attention to detail that buyers and visitors notice. The raised profile catches light differently than a flat head, creating a subtle visual highlight at each tube endpoint. Available in bulk for manufacturing runs. For commercial pricing, visit Business Solutions. For rough hard floors on the same furniture, furniture slides with ABS surfaces handle textured surfaces on the floor-contact legs.

Maintenance and Inspection

Domed ellipse tube plugs require almost no maintenance. The PE material does not degrade under normal indoor or outdoor conditions. The domed surface can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Check periodically that the plug remains seated flush around the entire elliptical perimeter. The dome is the most exposed point: inspect for chips or deformation from impact or stacking contact, particularly at the tapered pointed ends where the dome profile is thinnest.

On commercial furniture that gets moved or handled frequently, inspect every 3 to 6 months. On static fixtures and display structures, an annual visual check is enough. Domed ellipse tube plugs are sold in multiples of 4, so keeping spares on hand for commercial environments is practical. If a dome is chipped or deformed at any point along its profile, replace the plug. The PE surface does not stain, discolor, or absorb cleaning products. In environments where furniture gets stacked, the dome is the first contact point during stacking and should be checked for compression marks or deformation after each stacking cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the larger domed size 20 × 35 mm instead of 20 × 40 mm?

The 20 × 35 mm dimension matches specific elliptical tubing used in furniture where the domed profile is most commonly specified. The flat head ellipse plug comes in 20 × 40 mm, and the thin head variant also uses 20 × 40 mm. But the domed version fits 20 × 35 mm tubing specifically. Measure your tube carefully: 20 × 35 and 20 × 40 are different sizes and the plugs are not interchangeable.

Does the domed head affect how much the plug protrudes from the tube?

Yes. The dome rises above the tube edge, adding a visible raised profile. On a flat head plug, the head sits flush with the tube end. The domed version extends outward by several millimeters. If clearance is tight (stacking furniture, close-mounted components), confirm the dome protrusion does not interfere before choosing domed over flat or thin head.

Can I use domed ellipse plugs on oval tubes?

No. Elliptical and oval tubes have different end profiles. Elliptical tubes have pointed, tapered ends. Oval tubes have rounded, blunt ends. A domed ellipse plug will gap at the blunt ends of an oval tube. For domed oval plugs, see domed oval tube plugs (15 × 40, 20 × 40, 25 × 50 mm).

Is the 15 × 30 mm domed plug the same tube size as the 15 × 30 mm flat head?

Yes. Both fit the same 15 × 30 mm elliptical tube. The difference is only the head profile: flat sits flush, domed curves outward. You can use flat head plugs on the floor-contact legs and domed plugs on the visible non-contact ends of the same chair, as long as all legs use 15 × 30 mm elliptical tubing.

Why does the 15 × 30 mm come in three colors but the 20 × 35 mm only two?

The 15 × 30 mm is the more widely used elliptical size, so it supports black, grey, and white. The 20 × 35 mm is a more specialized specification with lower demand, currently available in black and white. For grey in 20 × 35 mm or custom colors, contact Business Solutions.
