Overview

Square Threaded Inserts

Standard square tube plugs seal the tube end and protect the floor. But they cannot accept a leveling foot. Square threaded inserts do both: they press inside the hollow square tube with a ribbed PA body that grips all four interior walls, and they add a pre-installed zinc-plated steel nut that accepts any adjustable leveling foot with a matching M thread. One product provides tube sealing, floor protection, and threaded height adjustment in a single press-fit installation. The broadest square threaded insert range available: from 20 × 20 to 50 × 50 mm with M8, M10, and M12 threads. Also known as square tube leveling foot inserts, threaded inserts square furniture, or square tube inserts with nut.

PA (polyamide) body for strength under load. Zinc-plated steel nut (Fe HDG) for corrosion resistance and thread durability. Square threaded inserts are threaded inserts for square tube legs on tables, desks, workbenches, shelving, commercial fixtures, and any hollow square-legged furniture that needs adjustable leveling. -and-thread combinations. Black, grey, and white. Wall thickness 1 to 2 mm. Sold in packs of 4.

Available Sizes: 11 Square Threaded Inserts

Square threaded inserts are organized by tube size and thread. Larger tubes support larger thread sizes because the PA body needs enough cross-section to house the nut securely. The right square threaded insert matches your tube dimension, wall thickness, and the M thread of your leveling foot.

How Square Threaded Inserts Work

Two components in one product. The PA body press-fits inside the square tube and grips all four interior walls with flexible ribs. The zinc-plated steel nut is pre-installed in the center of the PA body. A leveling foot screws into the nut, and the nut transfers the load through the PA body to the tube walls.

Step 1. Press the insert into the tube

Align the insert corners with the tube corners. Push in by hand or tap with a rubber mallet. The PA body grips all four walls. The insert seals the tube end and anchors the nut.

Step 2. Screw in the leveling foot

Any leveling foot with the matching M thread screws directly into the nut. No drilling, no tapping, no additional hardware. The thread engagement is immediate.

Step 3. Adjust the height

Turn the leveling foot to raise or lower that corner. Each leg adjusts independently. On uneven floors, independent adjustment at each leg eliminates wobble and levels the furniture precisely.

How to Measure Your Tube

Two tube measurements plus the thread size. Square threaded inserts require the outside dimension of the square tube, the wall thickness, and the M thread of the leveling foot.

Step 1. Measure the outside dimension

Use calipers across one side of the square tube, outside edge to outside edge. Confirm both sides are equal. Available sizes: 20, 25, 30, 40, 45, and 50 mm.

Step 2. Measure the wall thickness

Use calipers at the tube end. All these inserts require a 1 to 2 mm wall. The PA body ribs are engineered for this range.

Step 3. Confirm the thread size

Check your leveling foot’s M thread. Not all thread sizes are available on all tube sizes. The 20 × 20, 25 × 25, and 45 × support M8 only. The 30 × 30, 40 × 40, and 50 × support multiple threads.

Corner alignment: Square threaded inserts must enter the tube with corners aligned to corners. The square profile means the insert only fits in one rotational orientation (or rotated 90°, 180°, 270°, which are all equivalent on a square). Align and press evenly.

How to Install

Same press-fit installation as standard square tube plugs, with attention to nut orientation. The nut must face the floor so the leveling foot can screw in from below. A rubber mallet is recommended for all sizes because the PA body with the steel nut is heavier and denser than a standard PE plug.

What you need
  • The correct square threaded insert matched to your tube size, wall thickness, and thread
  • A rubber mallet (recommended)
  • Clean, dry tube ends free of burrs, weld spatter, or debris in all four corners
  • The leveling foot (for installation after the insert is seated)
Installation steps
  1. Inspect the tube end. Remove burrs, sharp edges, and debris from all four interior walls and corners. Square tubes collect debris in the corners that can prevent the insert from seating.
  2. Align the square threaded insert with the tube opening. Match corners to corners. The nut faces outward (toward the floor).
  3. Press the insert into the tube by hand, then tap with a rubber mallet until the head sits flush with the tube edge.
  4. Screw the leveling foot into the nut by hand. Turn clockwise to the desired height. Adjust each leg independently.

What Square Threaded Inserts Solve

Everything a standard square tube plug provides, plus the ability to accept adjustable leveling feet. The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) recommends protective measures on all furniture legs, and square threaded inserts deliver that protection while adding height adjustment that standard plugs lack.

Adjustable leveling on square-legged furniture

The primary function. Tables wobble on uneven floors. Workbenches need precise leveling for tool accuracy. Display fixtures need uniform height across a row. Square threaded inserts provide the M-threaded connection that leveling feet require. Each leg adjusts independently.

Floor protection through leveling feet

The leveling foot becomes the floor contact surface. Most feet have base pads (PE, rubber, or anti-slip TPE) that protect floors better than bare metal. Unlike leaving furniture on unlevel bare metal legs, the combination of insert plus leveling foot provides adjustment and protection. Browse our adjustable leveling feet for options with different base materials and load ratings.

Tube sealing on square profiles

Same sealed end as standard square tube plugs. The PA body fills the square tube opening and prevents moisture, debris, and insects from entering. On steel tubing, sealed ends prevent internal corrosion. The nut does not compromise the seal because it is embedded within the PA body.

The broadest square threaded insert range

6 tube sizes, 3 thread options, No other range covers as many square tubing specifications with threaded connections. From the smallest 20 × 20 mm lightweight fixtures to the largest 50 × 50 mm industrial workbenches, square threaded inserts provide the leveling anchor for virtually every square tube specification in the furniture industry.

Choosing the Right Thread Size for Square Tubes

The M thread determines the leveling foot diameter and load capacity. Smaller threads handle lighter loads. Larger threads handle heavier loads. Not all thread sizes are available on all tube sizes because the PA body must have enough cross-section to house the nut securely.

M8: universal

Available on all 6 tube sizes. Handles standard residential and commercial furniture weight. The default choice for most tables, desks, and display fixtures in both residential and commercial settings. If you are unsure which thread to specify, M8 covers most applications.

M10: heavy commercial

Available on 30 × 30, 40 × 40, and 50 × 50 mm. For heavy conference tables, library tables, and commercial furniture that supports substantial weight. Larger thread provides more metal contact and greater stripping resistance under sustained heavy loads.

M12: industrial

Available on 30 × 30 and 40 × 40 mm. For the heaviest applications: industrial workbenches, laboratory tables, and furniture supporting heavy equipment. The largest thread provides maximum load capacity through the threaded connection.

Materials and Construction

Same two-material construction as round threaded inserts. PA body for tube grip and load transfer. Zinc-plated steel nut for the threaded connection. The square profile adds the four-wall grip geometry that round inserts do not have.

PA (Polyamide) Body Four-wall grip + load transfer

PA provides the rigidity to support furniture weight through the threaded connection. The flexible ribs grip all four interior walls. The body transfers compressive load from the nut to the tube walls evenly across four flat surfaces. PA handles −40 °C to 85 °C and resists industrial cleaning chemicals.

  • Four-wall grip: ribs engage all four interior surfaces and four corners
  • High tensile strength: supports heavy loads without deformation
  • Chemical-resistant for commercial and industrial environments
  • Black, grey, and white (availability varies by size and thread)
Fe HDG (Zinc-Plated Steel) Nut Threaded connection

Pre-installed zinc-plated steel nut. Accepts standard M-thread leveling feet. The zinc plating provides corrosion resistance for indoor use. For environments with moisture, chemicals, or outdoor exposure, stainless steel square threaded inserts replace the zinc nut with stainless steel.

  • M8 available on all 6 tube sizes
  • M10 on 30 × 30, 40 × 40, and 50 × 50 mm
  • M12 on 30 × 30 and 40 × 40 mm
  • Zinc-plated: corrosion-resistant for standard indoor use

Square Threaded Inserts vs. Other Options

If your square-legged furniture needs adjustable leveling, here is how square threaded inserts compare.

vs. Standard Square Tube Plugs

Standard square tube plugs seal the tube with PE but have no threaded connection. They cannot accept leveling feet. Use standard plugs on legs that do not need height adjustment. Use square threaded inserts on legs that do.

vs. Extended these inserts

Extended these inserts have a longer body for extra grip in thin-walled 40 × 40 and 60 × 60 mm tubes. Use extended when the standard depth does not hold firmly enough under load.

vs. Stainless Steel these inserts

Stainless steel these inserts replace the zinc nut with stainless steel for corrosion resistance in kitchens, bathrooms, and chemically harsh environments. Same PA body, same press-fit installation. Choose stainless steel when the environment would corrode zinc.

vs. Round or Rectangular Threaded Inserts

Round threaded inserts fit round tubes. Rectangular threaded inserts fit rectangular tubes. Square threaded inserts fit square tubes. The nut and PA construction are the same. Match the insert shape to the tube shape.

Where Square Threaded Inserts Work Best

Square threaded inserts are designed for any hollow square furniture leg that needs an adjustable leveling foot. The 6-size, 3-thread range covers virtually every square tubing specification in the furniture industry.

Where People Use These Inserts

Anywhere hollow square furniture legs need adjustable leveling feet. Square threaded inserts are the bridge between the hollow square tube and the threaded leveling foot.

Commercial furniture

Restaurant tables, hotel lobby tables, conference room tables, office desks, and retail fixtures with square tube legs. The 30 × 30 and 40 × 40 mm sizes with M8 and M10 threads cover the vast majority of commercial furniture. In commercial environments, uneven floors cause wobbles that affect customer experience, spills drinks, and damage floor finishes through concentrated rocking pressure. The inserts paired with leveling feet eliminate wobble. Available in bulk. For commercial pricing, visit Business Solutions.

Industrial and workshop

Workbenches, assembly tables, laboratory tables, and industrial fixtures where precise leveling affects work quality and tool accuracy. The 40 × 40 and 50 × 50 mm sizes with M10 and M12 threads handle the heavy loads common in these environments. For stainless steel nuts in wet or chemically harsh workshop conditions, see stainless steel these inserts. For extended grip on thin-walled 40 × 40 and 60 × 60 mm tubes, see extended these inserts.

Maintenance and Inspection

Check periodically that the insert remains seated in the tube and the leveling foot is tight in the nut. Vibration and repeated adjustment can loosen the foot. Re-tighten by hand. On furniture that gets moved frequently, readjust the leveling feet after each relocation because the new floor surface will have different levelness.

On commercial furniture, inspect every 3 to 6 months. On residential furniture, check when the wobble returns. Square threaded inserts are sold in packs of 4 for convenient replacement. The PA body does not degrade from cleaning chemicals or UV exposure. If the zinc plating shows corrosion (rare indoors), replace the insert or switch to the stainless steel variant for that environment. On furniture with M12 inserts carrying heavy loads, check the thread engagement more frequently because heavier sustained loads create more compression on the nut and PA body interface over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which square sizes support M10 and M12 threads?

M10 is available on 30 × 30, 40 × 40, and 50 × 50 mm. M12 is available on 30 × 30 and 40 × 40 mm. The smaller sizes (20 × 20 and 25 × 25) only support M8 because the larger nut required for M10 and M12 would not fit within the smaller PA body. The 45 × 45 mm size currently supports M8 only.

Can I use square threaded inserts on rectangular tube legs?

No. Square inserts have equal sides and will not fit a rectangular opening. Use rectangular threaded inserts for rectangular tubing. The insert shape must match the tube shape exactly

What happens if I need a corrosion-resistant nut?

For kitchens, bathrooms, and environments with moisture or chemical exposure, stainless steel square threaded inserts replace the zinc-plated nut with a stainless steel nut. Available in 30 × 30 and 40 × 40 mm with M8 and M10 threads.

Are square threaded inserts compatible with all our leveling feet?

Yes, as long as the M thread matches. An M8 square insert accepts any M8 leveling foot. An M10 insert accepts any M10 foot. Browse our adjustable leveling feet range for options in each thread size, including standard base, anti-slip, ball-joint, tilt, and stainless steel rod variants.

How does the square body grip differently from the round version?

Round threaded inserts grip a continuous curved surface. Square threaded inserts grip four flat interior walls plus four corners. The ribs on each flat wall compress independently. Corner alignment during installation matters: match the insert corners to the tube corners for even seating across all four sides.
