Case Study · Children’s Area Hotel Lobby

Three generations of glides failed before we found the one that didn't.

A flagship Orlando-area destination resort had a recurring problem in the children’s area of one of their lobbies: the stools kept tearing through glides faster than housekeeping could replace them. Over the course of the project, our team field-tested four different glide constructions on the same stools, in the same environment, watched three of them fail, and documented exactly why.

Four generations of glides tested on the same stools in the same lobby. Three failed; one didn’t.

What we learned

Generation 1

PTFE (Teflon) slides

Wore down within months, especially where stools dragged across carpeted transitions. The remaining screws had to be removed from every stool leg before the next attempt could be installed.

Generation 2

Single-nail glides

Cheap commodity glides attached to the leg with a single driven nail. Broke off under repeated lateral force, leaving the exposed nail sticking out of the stool leg. A safety problem and a floor-damage problem at the same time. Note: not the same as our nail-on glides, which are mechanically secured with a tubular rivet, not a single nail.

Generation 3

Soft plastic glides

Wore down rapidly and consistently broke at the nail attachment point. Same failure pattern as the previous generation, just slightly slower.

Generation 4

Adhesive-backed (the solution)

Smooth movement across the floor. Enough resistance to keep the stool from sliding out from under guests. No nails, no torn-up leg bottoms, no failures across the documented testing window.

The installed solution. Six adhesive-backed glides per stool, no rivets, no torn leg bottoms.

The lesson holds across every project we’ve supported since: a glide that works on hardwood will not necessarily work on carpet, and a glide that works on a static dining chair will not necessarily survive a children’s stool that gets moved 50 times an hour. We spec by use case, not by catalog.

“If a glide can’t survive a children’s lobby, it won’t survive your dining room.”

Case Study · Restaurant Dining Room

Why Teflon glides fail on commercial carpet

A common assumption is that Teflon glides slide forever. In a residential setting they often do. In a restaurant setting on commercial carpet, they don’t, and the reason is in the material data sheet.

PTFE (Teflon) glide

  • Shore D hardness: 50–60
  • Sliding behavior: Initially smooth, abrades into the carpet over time
  • Failure window in commercial use: months

Commercial nylon carpet

  • Rockwell R hardness: 100–120
  • Selected for: Durability, abrasion resistance
  • Effect on softer glides: Acts like sandpaper

Polypropylene carpet

  • Rockwell R hardness: ~92
  • Selected for: Stain resistance, durability
  • Effect on softer glides: Same problem, slightly slower

PTFE is roughly half as hard as the carpet fiber it slides against. Initial performance feels excellent; long-term performance is a counter going down. Our recommended commercial furniture floor protection glide for commercial carpet uses a hard ABS sliding face matched to the Rockwell hardness of the carpet, not a softer one.

Commercial furniture floor protection built for facilities most likely to break a cheap glide.

Every industry below has tested our commercial furniture floor protection products in real working environments, restaurants in service, ballrooms during turnover, classrooms with chairs scraping all day.

Hotels & Resorts

A 600-chair ballroom turns over four times a day. The cost of one bad glide multiplies by 2,400 every cycle. We supply the properties that can’t afford to get this wrong.

Restaurants

A busy restaurant moves each chair 200+ times a day. That’s 73,000 scrapes a year, per chair. Our glides absorb the punishment so your hardwood doesn’t.

Offices & Commercial

Conference chairs, task seating, reception furniture. If it sits on a floor you want to keep looking new, we have the right hardware for it.

Schools & Universities

A single classroom moves chairs 50+ times a day, every school day, for nine months. We supply commercial furniture floor protection to districts that have stopped buying replacement glides every semester.

Healthcare & Senior Living

Bedside tables, dining chairs, transfer seating. Quiet movement matters. Our glides reduce the screech that wakes patients and the drag that strains caregivers.

Government & Religious Facilities

Council chambers, pew kneelers, multipurpose hall stacking chairs. Specs that hold up under public scrutiny and budget review.

Why facility teams choose Superior Glide for commercial furniture floor protection.
