Knowing how to measure furniture legs for glides and slides is the difference between products that stay on and products that come off. The rule is simple: pick a glide or slide that sits flush with the leg base or slightly smaller. Never larger. That’s it. Everything else is just measuring the leg correctly and finding the product that matches.

The Sizing Rule for Glides and Slides

glide sizing correct vs oversized diagram

Oversized glides cause every problem. They rock under weight. They catch on floor edges and doorways. They peel off because the overhang bends the glue every time someone sits down. With nail-on glides, the overhang acts as a lever, and the rivet loosens.

Undersized glides expose part of the leg to the floor. You lose protection.

The right size sits tight. No rocking. No peeling. No catching. The weight stays centered on the glide, and everything holds.

Match the size correctly, and you get years of protection.

How to Measure Furniture Legs for Glides and Slides Correctly

Measure at the base of the leg where it touches the floor. Not the middle. The base.

Measuring Round Legs

Measure the diameter at the base where the leg will touch the ground.

Measuring Square Legs

Measure the width on one side.

Measuring Rectangular Legs

Measure both the width and length. You need both.

Measuring Tapered Legs

Measure where the leg actually contacts the floor. If it’s 30 mm at the top and 25 mm at the bottom, the glide needs to match the bottom measurement.

Measuring Legs with Decorative Details

Measure at the widest point where the leg contacts the floor. If the leg has rings or a flare at the bottom, measure above them, not at the very edge.

Tip: Measure at least twice to make sure. Different chairs in a set sometimes vary slightly.

Standard Sizes: Round, Square, and Rectangular

When you measure furniture legs for glides and slides, you’ll most likely find one of these standard sizes.

Round Glide Sizing Chart

Round glides fit these leg sizes:

  • 23 mm (0.91″) glide fits legs 23–27 mm (0.91″–1.06″)
  • 28 mm (1.10″) glide fits legs 28–37 mm (1.10″–1.46″)
  • 38 mm (1.50″) glide fits legs 38–49 mm (1.50″–1.93″)
  • 50 mm (1.97″) glide fits legs 50–74 mm (1.97″–2.91″)
  • 75 mm (2.95″) glide fits legs 75 mm (2.95″) and above

Square Glide Sizing Chart

Square glides fit these leg sizes:

  • 23 × 23 mm (0.91″ × 0.91″) glide fits legs 23–27 mm (0.91″–1.06″)
  • 28 × 28 mm (1.10″ × 1.10″) glide fits legs 28–37 mm (1.10″–1.46″)
  • 38 × 38 mm (1.50″ × 1.50″) glide fits legs 38–49 mm (1.50″–1.93″)
  • 50 × 50 mm (1.97″ × 1.97″) glide fits legs 50–74 mm (1.97″–2.91″)
  • 75 × 75 mm (2.95″ × 2.95″) glide fits legs 75 mm (2.95″) and above

Rectangular Glide Sizing

Rectangular glides:

  • 33 × 19 mm (1.30″ × 0.75″) glide fits legs 33–40 × 19–25 mm (1.30″–1.57″ × 0.75″–0.98″)

Key rule: If your measurement falls between two sizes, pick the smaller one. Never size up.

What to Do If Your Leg Doesn’t Match Perfectly

You measure 24 mm and check the chart. A 23 mm glide fits legs 23–27 mm, so your 24 mm leg is covered.

You have five chairs: three are 26 mm, two are 27 mm. Use the 23 mm glide. All five fit within the 23–27 mm range without overhang.

The goal is one size that fits all the legs in a set without oversizing any of them. If the legs vary slightly, use the smaller compatible size.

Rectangular Legs Need Both Measurements

rectangular leg measure both dimensions diagram

If your leg is 33 × 19 mm, the 33 × 19 mm glide fits legs from 33–40 mm long and 19–25 mm wide.

A round glide is the same size in every direction, and that’s the trap with rectangular legs. Say your leg is 33 × 19 mm. The round chart shows a 28 mm glide fits legs 28–37 mm, so the 33 mm length looks like a match. But the leg is only 19 mm wide. A 28 mm round glide would stick out on both sides of it, and that overhang is what catches and peels. Rectangular legs need rectangular glides.

Measure both dimensions on rectangular legs and use the sizing chart to find the right fit.

Replacing Worn Glides

If glides are already on the furniture and wearing out, peel or pull off one and measure it. That’s your size.

It might be wrong (that’s why they’re failing), but it’s a starting point.

Common Mistakes When Measuring

Mistake 1: Sizing Up “to Be Safe”

Stop. Oversizing is the #1 cause of peeling. Always go smaller or flush.

Mistake 2: Measuring the Middle Instead of the Base

Furniture legs taper. The base is what matters. Measure where the leg touches the floor.

Mistake 3: Measuring Decorative Details

Measure where the leg actually contacts the floor, not around decorative rings or flares.

Mistake 4: Assuming All Chairs Match

Measure them anyway. Manufacturing variation happens. Check at least two or three pieces.

Mistake 5: Loose Glides After Installation

Check prep first. Clean the leg with rubbing alcohol (70% or higher), let it dry completely, press for 30 seconds, and wait 48 hours for the adhesive to fully set.

Most “loose” issues happen when prep is skipped, or you don’t wait long enough.

Installation After You Measure

Installing Self-Adhesive Glides

Clean the leg base with rubbing alcohol (70% or higher) and let it dry.

Peel off the backing, press firmly for 30 seconds, then wait 48 hours before moving the furniture heavily.

The adhesive needs that time to fully set.

Installing Nail-On Glides

Place the glide on the leg, centered on the base. Tap it in with a rubber mallet until the glide sits completely flush (level with the leg surface). Don’t leave it sticking out.

Why Correct Measurement Matters

A correctly sized glide or slide protects the floor for years because everything stays tight.

There’s no rocking. No peeling. No loose rivets. It works because it fits.
